When Software Updater is running under certain conditions in Windows XP, the computer will refuse to log off or shut down.

Details When Software Updater is running under certain conditions in Windows XP, when someone attempts to log off or shut down using the Start Menu, Task Manager, the Windows Security dialog, or from the command prompt (shutdown /l /t 0 or shutdown /s /t 0), some programs will close but the computer will refuse to log out.
Steps to reproduce
  1. Start Software Updater.
  2. Attempt to log out of your computer.
Workaround 1

(Temporary) Hold down <Ctrl>, <Shift> and <Esc> keys and release them. When Task Manager appears, switch to the Users tab, select your user account from the list and click Logoff. When a dialog box appears, click Log off user.

Workaround 2

(Temporary) Hold down <Ctrl>, <Shift> and <Esc> keys and release them. When Task Manager appears, switch to the Processes tab, select SoftwareUpadater.exe and click End Process. When a dialog pops up, click the End Process button. You should now be able to log out.

Workaround 3

(Disable Software Updater) Hold down <Ctrl>, <Shift> and <Esc> keys and release them. When Task Manager appears, click on New Task..., type in msconfig and click OK. Switch to the Startup tab. Find the item labelled "Software Updater" and uncheck it. Click OK. Click Restart.
