2. General Bugs

2.1 Shell: An error occurs when clicking the Back arrow in the Start bar or an application type page after closing a dialog.

Details: If you open and then close either the "About", "Log off..." or "Shut down..." dialogs while in the Start bar or one of the application type pages, and then click the Back arrow, you will receive the following error:

Object variable or With block variable not set.

Workaround: Once you receive this error, you should click "Continue". Instead of clicking on the Back arrow, you should now click on the Home button, which should take you back to the "Main" page.

2.2 When moving or copying files in File Manager "Nemo" using the standard tree-view file operations dialog, the destination files have no extensions.

This bug does not affect moving or copying folders.

Workaround 1: Rename the files after they have been copied or moved.

Workaround 2: Move or copy the folder that the files reside in.

Workaround 3: Use the "Simple" file operations dialog by shift-clicking "Move" or "Copy". This is not recommended as the "Simple" file operations dialog is still rather buggy.

2.3 An error occurs when browsing some folders with large files in File Manager "Nemo".

Details: When you open a folder with large files in File Manager "Nemo", the following error occurs:

Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow.

This error occurs if you have set File Manager "Nemo" to show file sizes.

Workaround: In Registry Editor, navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MarkKB\Nemo" and delete the value "fileSize".

2.4 An error occurs when starting SchedulePN when you have not created any events, or clicking on the "Instant Messengers" button in StartupPN when you haven't configured your IMs.

Details: When you start SchedulePN, or click the "Instant Messengers" configuration icon in StartupPN, the following error occurs:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

This error occurs if you have never created events in SchedulePN, or if you haven't configured your instant messengers in StartupPN.

Workaround (SchedulePN): Click continue, then create an event. You can delete it afterwards.

Workaround (StartupPN): Click continue, then click the "OK" button in the "Instant Messenger Configuration" dialog.

2.5 An error occurs when searching with SearchPN.

Details: When searching in a folder where you do not have privileges to access it or one or more of its subfolders, the following error occurs:

Access to the path '%PATH%' is denied.

where %PATH% is the path of the folder you do not have privileges to access.

Workaround: Modify your search parameters to avoid folders you do not have privileges to access.

2.6 An error occurs when trying to access a networked computer in File Manager "Nemo".

Details: When navigating to a networked computer in File Manager "Nemo", the following error occurs:

The UNC path should be of the form \\server\share.

Workaround: If you know the name of one of the shares on the computer you are trying to access, try navigating to it directly. For example, to access the share "Library" on the computer "Lighthouse", type \\Lighthouse\Library into the address box and click Go.

2.7 An error occurs when navigating to a share from a networked computer that requires a username and password in File Manager "Nemo".

Details: When navigating to a share that requires a username and password, the following error occurs:

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

This does not affect users that have already entered their username and password for that share.

Workaround: After clicking Continue, right-click on a blank portion of the window and select Open folder in Explorer from the context menu that appears. Windows Explorer will prompt you to enter your username and password for the share. After you have entered the correct username and password in Explorer, you should be able to access the share in Nemo.

2.8 When Display advanced options is checked but Skip game search isn't, the First Run Wizard will go straight from the Scanning Games step to the Finished step.

Details: The First Run Wizard will skip the Icon Selection step when Display advanced options is checked but Skip game search isn't. If you click Back, one can access the Icon Selection step, but if they click Back again, it will go back to the Finished step.

Workaround 1: Click Back at the Finished step to set options in the Icon Selection step.

Workaround 2: At the Welcome step, select Skip game search as well as Display advanced options.

2.9 The checkboxes in the Welcome step of the First Run Wizard will always start off unchecked, even if you navigate back to the step after checking them.

Workaround: If you've navigated back to the Welcome step, you can check both then uncheck them to "zero" the settings.

2.10 The PeoplePN window appears disabled on launch.

Details: When you start PeoplePN, the main window appears disabled. This is because the dialog for setting your Contacts folder has disabled the main window, but has appeared under it.

Workaround: Hold down the key and press repetitively until you reach the window labelled "Form3". Then, deselect both keys.

2.11 The Calculator settings in SettingsPN don't affect the Calculator icon in Project Nelson.

Details: If you change the Calculator settings in SettingsPN, they don't appear to change the properties or action of the Calculator icon in "Accessories" in Project Nelson.

Workaround: Start the registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MarkKB\Project Nelson, and delete the "CalcChecked" and "CalcPN" values. Then, in Project Nelson, click the Calculator icon, and configure the Calculator settings to your preference.

2.12 Arrows are replaced by various letters in Project Nelson.

Details: The following characters are shown in the stead of the arrows they represent.

Tailless Arrows

q for down, p for up, u for right.

Tailed Arrows

for right, for left.

This problem occurs for people who don't have the Wingdings 3 font, which is distributed with Microsoft Office 97, 2000, XP and 2003.

Workaround 1: If you have a copy of the Microsoft Office installation media, you can copy it off the disc.

(In the following examples, X:\ represents your CD drive.)

Workaround 2: If you have a licensed copy of Microsoft Office, you can use it to install Office, and thus, Wingdings 3.

Workaround 3: If you know someone who has Microsoft Office, you can ask them to send a copy of the Wingdings 3 font to you.

3. OS-Specific Bugs

3.1 Windows 2000

3.1.1 An error occurs in the First Run Wizard when you choose the System folders' "Default" option in the Icon Selection step.

Details: When you select the "Default" radio button under "System folders" in the Icon Selection step of the First Run Wizard, the following error occurs:

Object reference not set to an instance or an object.

Workaround: Start the Registry editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\ and create the following keys and values:

KeyNameValue
{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon(Default)%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe,0
{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\DefaultIcon(Default)%SystemRoot%\system32\mydocs.dll,0

The error should now be eradicated.

3.1.2 An error occurs when you try to shut down or restart your computer from Project Nelson.

Details: When you click the Yes or Restart buttons from the "Shut down..." dialog in Project Nelson, the following error occurs:

File not found.

This error occurs because, in its default configuration, Windows 2000 doesn't have the Remote Shutdown Utility (shutdown.exe) installed.

Workaround 1: Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del>. From the Windows Security dialog, select the Shut Down... button, choose what you want to do from the drop-down box, and click "OK".

Workaround 2: The Remote Shutdown Utility is included with the Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit, available from Microsoft Press.

3.1.3 Nothing happens when you select User Accounts from "Control Panel" in Project Nelson.

Workaround 1: In "Control Panel", click Show all Control Panel items... and double-click the Users & Passwords icon.

Workaround 2: In Project Nelson's Run box, type "control userpassword" and click Run.

3.1.4 A white box with a red "x" is displayed as your user account picture in Project Nelson.

This occurs because Windows 2000 doesn't have the user account picture feature.

Workaround 1: Ignore it. It's not really that important anyway. ^^

Workaround 2: Navigate to your common Application Data folder (usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data). In the Microsoft subfolder, create a new folder entitled User Account Pictures. Move any 48x48 bitmap (*.bmp) to the newly-created folder, and rename it to be the same as your username.

3.1.5 MediaPN crashes when you try to open it.

Details: When you try to run MediaPN, the following message appears:

MediaPN has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This error occurs if your computer doesn't have Windows Media Player 9 or later.

Workaround: Download and install Windows Media Player 9 or later.

3.1.6 ClockPN's window size is incorrect.

Details: The minimum size of the main window in ClockPN is slightly larger than usual, with a bit of the stopwatch tray showing. This is due to a difference in default title bar and border sizes between Windows 2000 and later versions.

Workaround: From "Control Panel", select Personalisation, and switch to the "Appearance tab". Click Advanced and, from the Item: drop-down box, select "Active Title Bar". Change the value in Size: to 25, and click OK twice.

3.2 Windows Vista

3.2.1 An error occurs when selecting a shell in Shell Manager "Abalone", when logging on, or when adding programs in the Programs Defaults step of the First Run Wizard.

Details: If you try to use Abalone to start a shell, or try to add a program to a category in the Program Defaults step of the First Run Wizard by using the "Other" section, the following error occurs:

Attempted to preform an unauthorised operation.

This occurs because the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista is blocking access to the "All Users" registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), and Project Nelson hasn't been designed to work with UAC.

Workaround 1 (Abalone): To launch Project Nelson directly, press <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<Esc> to bring up the Windows Task Manager. Click the New Task button and, in the dialog that appears, type ProjectNelson.exe /s 1 and press <Enter>.

Workaround 2 (Abalone): To launch Project Nelson at startup instead of Abalone, start the Registry Editor (regedit) using the method described above, and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. Locate the value named "Shell", replace Abalone.exe at the end of the string with ProjectNelson.exe /s 1, and press <Enter>.

3.2.2 An error occurs in the First Run Wizard when you choose the System folders' "Default" option in the Icon Selection step.

Details: When you select the "Default" radio button under "System folders" in the Icon Selection step of the First Run Wizard, the following error occurs:

Object reference not set to an instance or an object.

Workaround: Start the Registry editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\ and create the following keys and values:

KeyNameValue
{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon(Default)%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe,0
{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\DefaultIcon(Default)%SystemRoot%\system32\mydocs.dll,0

The error should now be eradicated.

3.2.3 Incorrect icons are displayed in the First Run Wizard in the Icon Selection step, or in File Manager "Nemo".

The icons for various files, folders and shell locations will be mismatched with other icons. This occurs because the order in which the icons of shell32.dll are arranged has changed.

Workaround 1: Start Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer, create the key Shell Icons, and add the following string values to it:

NameValue
0%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,2
2%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,11
3%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,3
6%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,23
8%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,27
11%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,25
29%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,153
34%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,105
36%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,117

3.2.4 A white box with a red "x" is displayed as your user account picture in Project Nelson, and no username is displayed.

This occurs because Windows Vista no longer uses seperate files for each user's picture, and it no longer stores the username in the registry.

Workaround (User Account Picture): Navigate to your common Application Data folder (usually C:\ProgramData\). In the Microsoft folder, open the User Account Pictures subfolder. Move any 48x48 bitmap (*.bmp) to the folder, and rename it to be the same as your username.

Workaround (Username): Start the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. Create a new string key called "Logon User Name", and set the value as your username.

3.2.5 When you select Personalisation from "Control Panel" in Project Nelson, the Display Settings dialog appears.

This occurs because the Desktop, Themes, Screen Saver and Appearance tabs of Display Properties have been removed from desk.cpl, having been replaced by their respective pages in Personalization section of the Control Panel.

Workaround: In the Run box, type control.exe /name Microsoft.Personalization and click Run.

3.2.6 The wallpaper is not displayed when Project Nelson is the shell.

Details: This occurs because, in previous versions of Windows, the operating system set the wallpaper, while in Windows Vista, the shell sets the wallpaper.

3.2.7 An error occurs when launching LockPN.

Details: After trying to lock your computer with LockPN, the following error occurs:

Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System' is denied.

This occurs because the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista is blocking access to the "All Users" registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), and Project Nelson hasn't been designed to work with UAC.

Workaround: To lock your computer, press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> and select Lock computer from the menu that appears.

3.2.8 Some programs do not start when launching them from File Manager "Nemo", SearchPN, or Project Nelson's Run box.

Details: When launching a program that requires Administrator privileges (such as the Registry Editor or a setup program) from File Manager "Nemo", SearchPN, or Project Nelson's Run box, the program refuses to start. This occurs because the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista is blocking the program from executing, and Project Nelson hasn't been designed to work with UAC.

Workaround: In Project Nelson's Run box, type explorer.exe [path], where [path] represents the path of the program.

3.2.9 An error occurs when searching with SearchPN.

Details: When searching in some locations, such as your Documents folder, you will receive the following error message (where [PATH] represents the path of the folder being searched):

Access to the path '[PATH]' is denied.

This occurs because, for compatibility reasons Windows Vista places softlinks to some folders where the path may have been hard-coded in badly-programmed applications; however, to SearchPN, these look like normal folders, and it tries to search in them, causing this error.

Workaround: Modify your search to avoid locations that contain softlinks. Alternately, use Windows Search instead of SearchPN.

3.2.10 ClockPN starts with the stopwatch visible.

This is caused by the slight difference in title bar size between Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Workaround: In the Run box in Project Nelson, type control.exe /name Microsoft.Personalization and click Run. Click Window Color and Appearance. If you have Windows Aero enabled then, at the bottom of the page, click Open classic appearance properties for more color options. From the dialog that appears, click Advanced... and, from the Item: drop-down box, select "Active Title Bar". Change the value in Size: to 25, and click OK twice.

3.2.11 An error occurs when adding a startup item to the All Users group in StartupPN.

Details: When attempting to add a startup item to the All Users startup group in StartupPN, the following error occurs:

Attempted to preform an unauthorised operation.

This occurs because the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista is blocking access to the "All Users" registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), and Project Nelson hasn't been designed to work with UAC.

Workaround: Start Registry Editor, and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Create a value with the name being the title of the program you want to start at startup, and the value being the path to the program.

3.2.12 StartupPN does not remove an item from the All Users group despite showing that it has.

Details: When you try to remove a startup item from the All Users startup group using StartupPN, it will apparently do so. However, if you close the StartupPN window and reopen, it will become apparent that this is not the case.

Find and delete the items you wish not to run at startup.

3.2.13 When you select Windows Media Player 6.4 from the "Media Player" page in Project Nelson, the current version of Windows Media Player starts in WMP6.4's stead.

Details: This occurs because in Windows Vista, the Windows Media Player 6.4 executable (mplayer2.exe) is simply a stub which launches the current version of Windows Media Player.

3.2.14 Windows Mail is labelled Outlook Express in Project Nelson.

For compatibility reasons, Windows Mail in Windows Vista and Outlook Express in previous versions of Windows have the same file name (msimn.exe), so they are recognised as the same program.
