Major new features

Here's a showcase of the major new features in Project Nelson 1.0 Build 020. A full list of features categorised by program can be found below this section.

Experimental taskbar and app bar
Now users can switch between unminimised tasks easier, and keep the Project Nelson window hidden until needed.*

Selection hover boxes
Items that can be activated with a single click will now appear selected when hovered over, and category borders will appear on hover.*

Redesigned default program selector
The default program selection dialog box has been redesigned to be easier to use.

Add unrecognised programs to application types
If your program isn't recognised for an application type, you can now add it to the list.

Favourite folders added under "Locations".
Users can now access their favourite folders from My Stuff.

Recent Applications has been implimented.
Now users can see and run their most recently used applications.

Network support improved.
New Network system folder displays all network computers, while browsing to a computer displays its file shares.

Run as administrator command added to context menu of programs.

File type icons now supported.
File Manager "Nemo" now uses file type icons for most icons by default, although this can be turned off.

Drag and drop moving and copying added to File Manager "Nemo".

New and enhanced fields in PeoplePN, including the new Mobile and Phone fields, and an indicator to how long ago (or until) a person's birthday.

New dialog alert when an event starts in SchedulePN. Can be set to open a specified amount of minutes before an event instead.

New autorun dialog when a disc is inserted.

Shell

Experimental taskbar and app bar: Now users can switch between unminimised tasks easier, and keep the Project Nelson window hidden until needed.

Note: These features are turned off by default. To use them, you must check "Show appbar at startup" and "Show taskbar" on the Project Nelson tab in SettingsPN.

Applications page - Categories view

Selection hover boxes: Items that can be activated with a single click will now appear selected when hovered over.
Category border: Categories now have a coloured border, which can be shown on hover, all the time, or not at all.

Note: The above two features are turned off by default. To use it, you must change the appropriate settings in the "Selection Settings" dialog box under the Project Nelson tab in SettingsPN.

"View all" arrow appears on hover: The "View all" arrow for applications now appears only on hovering over the application. You can configure it to always show in SettingsPN.

Programs in each application are no longer hardcoded. Applications now use user-editable lists stored in the registry.
All applications are now functional. Placeholder applications have either been updated to work or removed. All apps now have "View all" arrow and context menu. Many apps have new icons.
New Messengers sub-category in Internet category.

Games category has been overhauled. All Games sub-categories now work. Many sub-categories have new icons, and some have been renamed. Layout has cleaned up significantly.
New Games sub-categories: Racing, Shooter, Sports.
Added All Games item to Games page: Allows the user to view all the games they have installed on their system and registered with Project Nelson.
Properties dialog redesigned. Properties dialog now has a cleaner look, with the same header as other Shell dialogs.
Go To Folder button in Properties dialog now launches default file browser, rather than Windows Explorer.

Applications page - Classic view

Classic view now displays shortcut icons.
Classic view now respects icon settings for Project Nelson: If Classic View icons are set to "Default", then Project Nelson will show the default Windows icons, rather than Project Nelson's icons, for folders and shortcuts.
Method of launching shortcuts changed: Double-clicking on shortcuts no longer produces a security dialog.

Applications page - Recent view

Recent Applications has been implimented. Now users can see and run their most recently used applications.
Recent Websites added: Users can now see and launch their recent websites.
Recent Docs display has been modified. Recent Docs now only shows 15 latest documents in chronological order. Additionally, items now show their icons and only their short name.

My Stuff

Favourite folders added under "Locations". Users can now access their favourite folders from My Stuff.
Icons for launching your default File Browser and Search programs added. Fixed program links "File Manager "Nemo"" and "SearchPN" converted into application links "File Browser" and "File Search".

Clock

Clock now shows as part of taskbar if taskbar mode is turned on.
New large clock and calender shown on hover in taskbar mode, otherwise when clicking on the blue strip at the top of the window.
Stopwatch redesigned and placed on the Large Clock and Calendar page.

Settings

Can now change the default program for almost every application with new, redesigned dialog.
New Icons Settings dialog allows users to change what set of icons they use with Project Nelson, as well as how certain icons in File Manager Nemo are displayed.

Desktop

Project Nelson now automatically sets the wallpaper and plays the startup sound in Windows Vista and above.

File Manager "Nemo"

Network support improved. New Network system folder displays all network computers, while browsing to a computer displays its file shares.
Run as administrator command added to context menu of programs.
File type icons now supported. File Manager "Nemo" now uses file type icons for most icons by default, although this can be turned off. In the event that no file type icon is found, Nemo can now display the default program icon inside of the file icon. File icons also display "tabs" showing their file extension for most types, although this can be turned off. Also, executables and shortcuts now display their icons. Custom folder icons and CD/DVD icons are also now supported.
Open in new window item added in the context menu for folders.
Keyboard shortcuts added. Keyboard shortcuts for navigation added, as well as fot the rename and location text boxes.
Information panel improvements: Shows icon for currently selected object in the information panel, and shows properties for the current folder if nothing is selected.
Improvements in the way objects are opened: Nemo now runs files using the folder it is currently in, rather than the working folder. Support for launching shortcuts added.
Copy/move improvements: Drag and drop moving and copying added to File Manager "Nemo". New move, copy and delete prompt and progress dialog added. Fixed a bug where moving some items would result in a “Source and destination folders are equal” when they aren’t.
Favourites list now uses Links folder rather than registry to store favourite folders.
Properties dialog redesigned with a cleaner look, and with the same header as other dialogs. The file's name and icon is now shown in the titlebar.
New drive and shortcut icons.
Various design changes and bug fixes.

PeoplePN

New information panel in the Groups window displays the group's photo (if one is available) and the number of people in the group.
Phone and Mobile fields added, Email and Website fields are now clickable links, and Location field can now use multiple lines.
Age field now gives the age of the selected person in years and months, and how far away or ago their birthday is if it's within a few months.
Contact's photo improvements: Double-clicking on a person’s photo will open it in your image viewer. Person's photo now shown by default in the list of contacts, in true colour and with better scaling, and if one isn't available it now shows a default profile image instead.
PeoplePN now goes back to the main window if the Person Info window is closed, rather than exiting altogether.
Various design changes and bug fixes.

SchedulePN

New dialog alert when an event starts, which can also be set for a specified amount of time before the event instead.
New event features: Events can now be given names as well as messages, and can now be edited. More than one full day event can now occupy the same day. Events are now saved as files instead of in the registry.
New background mode: SchedulePN can now be minimised to the tray so it can pop up alerts without being open.
Various design changes.

MediaPN

Browse button added to Open dialog.
Banner added to the top of the window, and the window is now blank on open (instead of showing fake information.).
Added in Update 1: You can now add files to the current playlist and open Windows Media playlist files.
Various design changes.

StartupPN

New autorun feature displays a dialog when a disc is inserted, with icons for a setup program (if available) and opening the drive up in the default file manager.
Now lists and runs programs from the Startup folder in the Start menu.
Entries in the Instant Messenger list are now dynamic rather than fixed, and now uses the Startup registry list to tell if an IM is running at startup rather than its own list.
Various bug fixes and design changes.

CalcPN

New root button for determining arbitrary roots of numbers.
Square root button now faster and can find the square root of any number, not just those with integer roots, due to now using native function for determining roots rather than its own. Various design changes.

Other major changes

First Run Wizard

Can now change default program for applications from almost every category except System Tools and Programming with redesigned chooser dialog.
Now searches Start menu for games before asking to search the hard drive.
Now converts old Project Nelson settings to new format.
Changed method of searching hard drive for games to be much more efficient.
Various bug fixes and design changes.

Abalone Shell Manager

No longer requires elevation.
Main window now redesigned to use a dynamic list rather than static buttons.
Now only runs if no user shell is set, and now uses the proper user shell registry key rather than its own.
Crash detection removed (since due to changes in how Abalone works it is now unnecessary.) Various design changes.

Bug Tracker ("CrashPN")

The following bug report categories were modified:
- Correction (e.g. grammatical) was split into two categories: Languages (grammatical, spelling, tone, ect.) and Visual (layout problems, graphical glitches, icons, ect.)
- Minor annoyance was renamed Minor bug (you can continue as if nothing happened).
- Major annoyance (the I-can’t-get-my-work-done kind) was merged with Non-fatal bug.
- Non-fatal bug was renamed Non-fatal bug (task doesn’t complete, but app doesn’t crash).
- Severe massecre (i.e. brings down the system) was renamed to Severe massecre (brings down the system).
Various bug fixes and design changes.

Help and help documentation

Added introduction topics for all applications, and specific topics for Applications page topic in “Project Nelson”, browsing folders topic in “File Manager “Nemo””, and submitting a bug report topic under “CrashPN”.
Added About dialog to all Project Nelson apps.
Added help menu to all Project Nelson apps with links to Help, Settings and About.
Help program can now open a given topic from the command line arguments.
